For the people of Because We Carry who do the most amazing job helping refugees at Lesvos (Greece), we have collected essential items the organisation tells us the people are in desperate need of. All donations have been transported to Lesvos at the end of September 2019.
In late august 2015, three young women from Amsterdam left for Lesvos. In their luggage, over one thousand baby carriers – donated by hundreds of concerned people – for deprived mothers with children seeking refuge and safe-haven in Europe. Once arrived on the small Greek island they encountered a situation worse than they could have imagined. The human desolation was immense. People suffered from hunger and cold. These people – stranded on the shores of Europe – needed help, urgently.
It was this moment that the three friends decided to act according from what they’ve learned from Ghandi in their yoga experiences, and become the vehicle for the change they wish to see.
Because We Carry acts according the saying ‘less talk, more action’. On Lesvos, rotating teams of volunteers act to alleviate the ongoing human suffering of people arriving on their way to a safe haven.
The teams help those arriving on feeble boats on the inhospitable shore, by handing out dry clothes, deliver baby carriers for the long walking journey ahead, and supply the often exhausted people with food. They also aim to bring joy, and spark some hope and respect into this further desperate context.
